Many Americans are struggling to hear modern jazz (from Bebop on). My experience playing in Europe is that the public are generally more sophisticated, perhaps because they are accustomed to complex music. Some clues can help people become more familiar with this music, which can be very enjoyable and rewarding.
First, the base rate. Listen to the drums. Jazz is multi-dimensional, but the syncopated swing and America is still considered the power of improvisation.Then listen to the bass and drums playing together, the two instruments to create the overall pace.
Usually there is a piano chord comping instrument, guitar, or vibration. ”Models” is short for surveillance. This is where the line is provided, but generally without the roots of the chords in the bottom (leaving it to the grave). The answers follow the soloist and the rhythm and fill gaps.
